Deck Staining & Sealing
Peeling solid stain and gray, splintered boards on Millis decks are our most common call in town.
DetailsMillis houses tend to be modest capes and ranches with big back decks, and the decks wear out long before the siding does. We strip, repair and restain them, and repaint the houses they're attached to.

Millis is a small town on the Charles River, with Main Street running through its center past older farmhouses, Victorians and a few commercial blocks. Most of the housing is modest: capes and ranches from the 1950s through the 1970s on quiet side streets, plus newer subdivisions and condo communities added more recently. Nearly every one of those capes and ranches has a pressure-treated deck or a porch off the back. We serve Millis as part of our Norfolk County coverage, and deck and exterior work fills most of our schedule here.
The most common call we get from Millis is about a deck that was coated with solid stain a few years ago and is now peeling in patches. Solid stain on a horizontal surface behaves like paint: it sits on top of the wood, foot traffic and standing water wear through it, and it lets go unevenly. The boards underneath gray out and splinter. Restaining over the top just adds another layer to peel. A lasting fix takes the old coating off first.

We remove failed solid stain with a stripper made for wood coatings, scrub and rinse, and follow with a brightener to neutralize the stripper and restore the wood's color. Stubborn areas get sanded. Popped nails are reset or replaced with deck screws, and split or soft boards are swapped out. Once the wood is dry, we apply a penetrating oil-based stain that soaks in rather than forming a film, so it wears away gradually and can be refreshed without stripping next time. As a typical planning range, stripping and restaining a 300 to 400 square foot Millis deck runs $1,465 to $2,890, and the walk-through sets the real number.
Railings and stairs get the same treatment, and we stain fences in the same color when you want the yard to match.
Millis capes and ranches are straightforward to paint, with low eaves and easy ladder access. The wear pattern is sun: the south and west walls chalk and fade while the north side stays sound. We wash the house, scrape and spot-prime, caulk window and door trim, and apply two coats. Older farmhouses and Victorians along Main Street take more prep and lead-safe work, since they predate 1978 and carry many coats of old paint. Front porches on those houses get new floorboards where needed and a porch enamel.
Decks need two or three dry days for stripping, drying and staining, and the wood has to be dry to the touch underneath. We watch the forecast closely and move dates when rain is coming. Rear decks are often reached through a side gate, so we ask that pets stay inside and gates stay closed while we're working.

Solid stain forms a film like paint, and on a deck, foot traffic and standing water wear through it unevenly. Once it starts lifting, new coats won't stick well. On Millis decks we strip it, brighten the wood, repair boards and apply a penetrating stain that doesn't peel.
Usually two to three in a row. One day for stripping and rinsing, at least a day for the wood to dry fully, and then staining. If rain is forecast for your Millis job, we move the dates rather than stain damp wood.
Yes. Many Millis homeowners have the backyard fence stained at the same visit so the yard matches. Fences get cleaned, loose boards fastened and stain applied by brush or sprayer with back-brushing so it soaks into the wood.
We do. The older farmhouses and Victorians on Millis Main Street need more prep than the town's ranches: scraping layered paint, lead-safe containment, trim repair and porch work. We schedule them with enough time for that prep.
