Historic Home Painting
Sherborn's antique farmhouses need hand scraping, original sash care and trim replaced to match profile, work that differs from a standard suburban repaint.
DetailsSherborn is rural by design, with antique farmhouses, barns and large homes set far back on wooded and open lots. Exterior work here means long runs of clapboard, outbuildings and weather that hits from every side.

Sherborn has kept its rural feel: a small town center with a church, town buildings and a few historic homes, stone walls along the roads, horse farms and houses on two acre lots or more. Many homes are antique Colonial farmhouses with ells and attached barns, added onto over two centuries. Others are mid-century and newer houses built on large wooded lots. Around Farm Pond and the conservation land, trees press close to the houses. Our painters plan Sherborn jobs around distance and scale more than in most towns we work in.
Older farmhouses here usually have wide pine clapboards and original window sash, with many layers of oil paint underneath. That paint has to be handled lead-safe, and the scraping and priming take time. Barns and outbuildings often get a solid stain or a heavy-bodied barn paint instead of house paint. Larger newer homes need their regular repaint cycle, and their shaded north walls grow mildew. We price and schedule each building on a property separately so owners can phase the work over more than one season.

On antique clapboard, we hand scrape and sand to a sound edge, rework the glazing on original sash where it has dried out and prime bare wood with an oil-based primer that soaks into the grain. Rotted corner boards, sills and drip caps get replaced to match the original profile. Barns are a different job: rough-sawn boards take a heavy solid stain or barn paint applied by brush and roller so it works into the texture. Because the paint on most farmhouses predates 1978, we contain and collect every chip.
Inside the antique houses, the work is mostly plaster: cracked ceilings in the front rooms, loose plaster along stair walls, and wide pine floors and trim that need careful masking. We reattach plaster with adhesive and washers, fill and skim, then paint in finishes that suit the age of the house. Some owners want period wallpaper back in a parlor or bedroom, which we hang over a lining paper. In the newer homes, requests run toward full repaints and kitchen cabinet work.
Long gravel driveways and soft fields mean we confirm where trucks can park and where well heads and septic fields sit before we unload. Ladders go on boards over lawn and garden beds, and we carry materials farther than on suburban jobs. Wind is a real factor on open lots, so spraying is rare and brushing and rolling are standard. We schedule outbuildings for the shoulder weeks of the season, after the main house painting is finished.

Yes, and we usually price them separately so you can phase the work. The house gets scraped, primed and painted with exterior acrylic, while the barn often gets a solid stain or barn paint worked into rough-sawn boards. Many Sherborn owners do the house one season and the barn the next.
We lay heavy plastic sheeting on the ground along each wall, mist surfaces to keep dust down and collect chips daily in sealed bags. Well heads and vegetable gardens get extra covering and a wider buffer. At the end of the job we vacuum and inspect the ground around the house before pulling the plastic.
We usually prime old oil-painted clapboard with an oil-based or bonding primer for adhesion, then finish with a quality exterior acrylic that stays flexible through freeze-thaw winters. Original window sash may get an oil glaze and enamel. The walk-through looks at what is on the house now and how well it is holding.
